Leone K. Tetzlaff, 94, residing in South Bend, passed away at 1:52 pm Sunday, August 19, 2012 in Memorial Hospital. She was born in South Bend on December 11, 1917 to the late Frederick and Carrie (Hartz) Rohleder, and remained a lifelong area resident. On October 10, 1936 in the former St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church, South Bend, Leone married Arthur Harold Tetzlaff, who preceded her in death on October 1, 2008 after almost 72 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a son, Garry R. Tetzlaff; grandson, Rick Tetzlaff; and three brothers, Robert, Frederick and Paul Rohleder.
Leone is survived by a son, Arthur Leon (Joyce) Tetzlaff of Stevensville, MI; a daughter in law, Karyl Sue Tetzlaff of South Bend; three grandchildren, James (April) Tetzlaff of St. Joseph, MI, Jill (Robert Sr.) Bonnell of Mishawaka and Marnie (Charles) Lawrence of New York City, NY; and four great grandsons, Corey, Zack, Jake and Aiden. Leone was a second generation member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ (formerly St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church), where she was active in the Senior Choir, the Women's Fellowship and the Over 60's Club. She also served as a teacher and superintendent of the elementary church school and was co-chairman of the historical and preservation committee of the church. Other organizations with which Leone volunteered her time and talent were being a foster parent, being a den mother for Clay Township Cub Scouts of Maple Lane United Methodist Church and volunteering with St. Joseph County Special Olympics. She was chairperson of Clay Township School Health Council and as such, was instrumental in securing the first speech and hearing clinician for Clay Township Schools, which were then under township trustee rule. She was parliamentarian of the Volunteer Service Bureau of St. Joseph County and served on the board of the Bremen Manor Retirement Home, which is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Leone was also a member of South Bend City Council and St. Joseph County Council of Parent & Teacher Associations, the Friends of Snite Museum at Notre Dame, the St. Joseph County Mental Health Association and the St. Joseph County Arthritis Society. In addition, she was a certified volunteer psychiatric aid at Beaty Hospital in Westville, IN. Leone was employed with George Wheelock and Co., the St. Joseph County Treasurer's Office and Associates Corporation of North America, from which she retired. Memorial services for Leone will be 11:00 am Thursday, August 23, 2012 in St. Peter's United Church of Christ, 915 N. Ironwood, South Bend, IN 46615, with Rev. Scott Bowie officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 10:00 - 11:00 am Thursday in the church prior to services. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Leone may be donated to St. Peter's United Church of Christ or the Recreation Fund of Bremen Manor Retirement Apartments, 515 S.
