GRANGER - Stanley J. "Stan" Hiotas, 78, of Granger, IN, passed away Saturday evening in his home with his loving family by his side. He was born February 21, 1932, in Newport, RI, to the late Demetrois and Mersina (Karakla) Hiotas from Greece. On October 11, 1958, in Elkville, IL, he married the former Julia Krelo, who survives along with his daughters, Thersa (Jim) Lauer of Granger, IN, Ceci (Tyler) Anderson of Madison, WI, and Carol (Tom) Culligan of Chicago, IL; and three grandchildren, Sophie, Jimmy and Nick Lauer; as well as his siblings, Penelope Hiotas of Newport, RI, and Charlie Hiotas of Grand Rapids, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Stan graduated from Providence College in 1953 with a B.S. in Education. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and became a fighter pilot and rose to the rank of captain, and proudly flew the SNJ Texas, Skyrader, Cougar and Mentor jets during his career and while serving in the Korean War as part of the Squadron VMA251. After proudly serving for the Marines, he began his career with A.B. Dick Corporation where he progressively was promoted over the next 15 years. In 1973, he became owner and president of the local A.B. Dick Co., in South Bend and retired in 1995. During that time, Stan was very active in the business and local community. He was a Founder's Circle member of the Sorin Society of Notre Dame, and was an avid fan of Notre Dame football, and enjoyed attending the former Quarterback Club luncheons. In his free time, Stan loved spending time with his family and circle of friends, and he loved playing competitive tennis with his family, sailing, and hunting with his brothers-in-law. His passion for flying took him and his grandkids to numerous air shows around the country. He was proud of being a Marine and belonged to the Marine Corps League. Stan was a member of the St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church and served on the Parish Council and was a lifetime member of the Order of AHEPA.Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 24, in St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church, 52455 N. Ironwood Drive. Father Geroge Konstantiopoulous will officiate services and burial with military honors will be at Southlawn Cemetery.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. and a Trisagion service will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. today, June 23, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North at 17033 Cleveland Road.
