GRANGER - Julia K. Hiotas, 85, of Granger, IN, passed away Monday, May 16th, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hiotas was born November 19, 1930, in Elkville, IL, to the late Sophie (Benedict) and Charles Krelo, and lived in the South Bend area since 1973. On October 11, 1958, she married Stanley J. Hiotas, who preceded her in death in 2010. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Theresa Lauer (Jim) of Granger, Ceci Anderson (Tyler) of Madison, WI, and Carol Culligan (Tom) of St. Paul, MN; three grandchildren, Sophie, Jimmy, and Nick Lauer; and her sisters, Sally Schaumberg of Naples, FL, and Cecilia Hutchcraft of Hudson, NY. Julie was raised on a family farm in southern Illinois as the second youngest out of 10 siblings. And while they had an incredibly close family, she left the farm to pursue a nursing education in St. Louis. Once she graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Louis City Hospital, she started her career at the St. Louis Veterans Hospital. Julie and her sister Sally left St. Louis for California in the early 1950's where Julie worked as an RN at Hollywood Presbyterian and at Saks Fifth Avenue. She also started her career there as a flight attendant for TWA. TWA allowed her to explore the world. While on a stop in San Francisco, she met the love of her life and husband of over 50 years, Stanley. It was love at first sight. Julie embraced life and was easily described as a woman who was independent, intelligent and inquisitive. In addition, she loved entertaining and hosting - whether it was a Notre Dame tailgate, a quaint dinner at home or just a reason to get together. Julie was owner of A.B. Dick Co. of South Bend until she retired in 1995. She volunteered at her church in South Bend and Naples, FL, was an avid gardener, tennis player, loved walking on the beach, reading, opera and the arts. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 20th, in St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 52455 Ironwood Rd., with Rev.
