Helen M. Byszewski
Aug. 9, 1926 - Oct. 6, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Helen M. Byszewski, 83, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, in her home. Helen was born on August 9, 1926 in South Bend to Michael and Anna (Walkowiak) Kaminski and was a lifelong resident. She was formerly employed with Standard Oil as a secretary. On October 8, 1949 in St. Hedwig Church, as Helen M. Kaminski, she married John A. Byszewski, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her parents, and her sister, Virginia Kaminski. Survivors include three sons, John P. (Jenny) Byszewski of Mission Viejo, CA, Michael Byszewski and Thomas (Theresa) Byszewski both of South Bend, IN; eight grandchildren, John B. (Becky) Byszewski of Tustin, CA, Brad (Elaine) Byszewski of Pasadena, CA, Ashley Byszewski of San Clemente, CA, Elysia Byszewski of South Bend, IN, and Tommy, Paul, John, and Maria Byszewski all of South Bend, IN; four great-grandchildren, John, Jane, and Benjamin of Tustin, CA and Nicholas Byszewski of Pasadena CA; and one brother, Robert (Patricia) Kaminski of Fort Myers, Florida. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 12, 2009 in St. John the Baptist Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Sunday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. To send online condolences, please visit Kaniewski.com. Helen was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will always be remembered for her gentle graciousness and hospitality which more often than not included one of her wonderful cooking creations. Helen loved to entertain company with her exceptional piano playing, an activity she enjoyed every day. Whether playing a duet with John, solo or teaching a grandchild to play chop-stick, the piano was one of her favorite pastimes. Helen was an avid Notre Dame fan. She will be fondly remembered for the wonderful tailgate parties she and John would host in the University Club parking lot. A good time was always had by all and nobody went away hungry. Helen had a keen sense of beauty and style. She had a meticulous approach from housecleaning, to decorating, to planting flowers, everything had a place! Helen was always a stylish dresser, not gaudy or ostentatious but quiet and sophisticated. From well coiffured hair to contemporary outfits to fashionable accessories, Helen could hold her own against any Hollywood movie star. Above all else, Helen was a wonderful mother. She had an unwavering belief in God and a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Helen and John met in the first grade at Saint Hedwig School. They have now been reunited in Heaven and shared their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday, October 8th. Together again, as they were always meant to be.
