June 19, 1943 - July 11, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Patricia A. Kaniewski, 70, of South Bend, passed away peacefully in the arms of her husband surrounded by her children Thursday, July 11, 2013. She was born on June 19, 1943, in South Bend, to the late Arthur and Jane (Zielinski) Ast. On December 1, 1962, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, as Patricia A. Ast, she married Robert B. Kaniewski. Together they shared over 50 years of love and laughter. She is survived by her husband; five children, Michael (Jill) Kaniewski, Francine (John) Pajakowski, Thomas "TK" (Cristy) Kaniewski, Angela Gustafson and Jeffrey (Jennifer Milliken) Kaniewski, all of South Bend; her eight grandchildren, Timmy and Alex Kaniewski, Mitchell and Paige Pajakowski, Hannah, Jack, Katelyn and James Kaniewski; her sister, Marlene (James) Wasikowski of Granger; her brother-in-law, Kenneth Kaniewski of Mishawaka; sister-in-law, Julie Rypniewski (Sister Virginette); and six nieces and nephews, Dan and Laurie Wasikowski of Chicago, Stefanie Wasikowski of South Bend, Kim D'Ambrosio of New York, Greg Kaniewski of South Bend and Debbie Kaniewski of Fishers, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kara Jane Kaniewski. Patty graduated from Saint Joseph High School in 1961. She was previously employed as a personal secretary in the Administration Department at the University of Notre Dame. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame (please meet directly at the church). Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Patty was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish, and a former member of the Christ Child Society and Delta Theta Tau Sorority. She also volunteered with student registration at the University of Notre Dame for many years. Patty was known for her beauty and sense of style, but she enjoyed the simple things in life and was kind to everyone she met. Ice skating with her sister Marlene and shopping with her two daughters, Fran and Angie, were two of her favorites, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. The family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Vel and Bob at Country Care West for the exceptional care they gave to Patty. To send online condolences, please visit www.kaniewski.com.
