Robert F. Szrom Jan. 8, 1934 - June 29, 2014 GRANGER - Robert "Bob" Francis Szrom, 80, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2014 at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross. The son of the late John and Clara (Zasada) Szrom, Robert was born in Hammond, Indiana. It was in this same town that he met his wife, Phyllis T. (Bados) Szrom and were married on May 10, 1958, they recently celebrated their 56th anniversary. Bob was a hard and determined worker. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University and earned his Master of Science Degree in Industrial Relations from Loyola University, Chicago, later attending Law School at Roosevelt University. Bob spent over 25 years working for Skyline Corporation in Elkhart, before retiring in July 2002. In his spare time, Bob was an avid golfer and euchre player as well as being a member of St. Pius X Parish. He belonged to the Saint Joseph Valley Basketball Officials Association, in which he was involved for over 30 years. Bob loved all college basketball but his favorite teams to root for were Purdue and Notre Dame. Licensed to officiate high school basketball games in both Michigan and Indiana, Bob donated his time to officiate the Special Olympics Games. He was an official score keeper for Notre Dame Men's basketball games and officiated games for: Notre Dame, Indiana University South Bend, and Bethel College. Bob is survived by: his loving wife, Phyllis, a son Paul R. (Susan) Szrom and a daughter Janet S. (Todd) Auel. Bob was a wonderful grandfather to: Andrew, Laura, & Mikey Szrom and Stephen & Joey Auel, they are all of Granger, IN. In addition to his parents Bob was preceeded in death by his eldest child, Stephen J. Szrom, who passed away in 1984. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 6th, from 2-6pm at McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, at 11am with visitation from 10-10:50am prior at St. Pius X Catholic Church Fir & SR23. Bob will be laid to rest next to his son at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Pius X Building Fund or Masses may be said.
