Sophie M. Gapski, 94, of Mishawaka, passed away at 9:00 A.M.on Saturday, March 24, 2007 in Beverly Living Center (formerly Countryside Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center) in Mishawaka. Sophie was born on May 3, 1912 in South Bend, as the daughter of the late Laurence and Stella (Jozwiak) Stajkowski. She was also preceded in death by twelve brothers and sisters, Stanley, Walter, Louis, Frank, Felix, Joseph, and Bert Stajkowski, Anna Rothballer, Helen Sobczak, Frances Stump, Irene Phillips and Evelyn Fanti. On January 20, 1934 as the former Sophie Stajkowski she married Larry E. Gapski who preceded her in death August 9, 1950. She is survived by a daughter Barbara (Phillip) Zwickl of Mishawaka, a granddaughter, Beth Zwickl of Mishawaka; two grandsons, Phillip J. (Michele) Zwickl Jr. of Chester, NY, and Kevin M. (Mary) Zwickl of Muncie, IN; and five great-grandchildren, Joseph, Kathryn, Madeline, Taylor and Brandon. Sophie worked for South Bend Toy for 25 years before retiring in 1977. She was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church as well as the Senior Citizen Club at the church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Casimir Catholic Church in South Bend with the Rev. Christopher Cox officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Polish Roman Catholic Cemetery in South Bend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in memory of Sophie be made to the St. Casimir Church Restoration Fund, 1308 W. Dunham St. South Bend, IN 46619.
