WASHINGTON, IN - Jack E. Szmanda, 77, formerly of South Bend, passed away, Tuesday, June 14, 2016, in Hillside Manor Nursing Home. Jack was born June 16, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Leo and Thelma (Irvin) Szmanda. On November 26, 1959, Jack married Dolores (Gittins) Szmanda; she preceded him in death on April 6, 2015, after 55 years of marriage. Jack was also preceded in death by his sisters, Joan Burger and Jane Robinson; brother, Thomas Szmanda; and brother-in-law, Irvin Paprocki; and granddaughter, Jessica Hack. Survivors of Jack include his children, Michaeleen S. (Douglas) Miller of Exton, PA, Mark K. Szmanda of Louisville, KY, and Ronald L. (Jada) Szmanda of Odon, IN; grandchildren, Nathan, Johanna, Andrew, and Allison Miller, Sara Higgs, and Adam Szmanda; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean K. (Bill) Cybulski and Sandy Paprocki; brothers, Jim (Gloria) Szmanda and Gary (Pat) Szmanda; brother-in-law, Glen (Sleepy) Robinson; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Jack was a graduate of New Carlisle High School. He honorably served his country in the United States Army Reserves. Jack retired in 2003 from Miles Laboratory/Bayer after 30-plus years. He was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church. Jack enjoyed woodworking, gardening and cooking.Visitation for Jack is 9:00 am to 11:00 am Saturday, June 18, 2016, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., South Bend, Indiana, with a Funeral Service to begin at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Jack's family is thankful for the staff of Hillside Manor Nursing Home and Heart to Heart Hospice who cared for him with an overwhelming abundance of love and compassion.
