[N2152] Joseph Marion Piatkowski
Jan. 12, 1927 - Dec. 23, 2016
SOUTH BEND - South Bend-Joseph M. Piatkowski, 89, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2016 at St. Paul's in South Bend. Joe was born on the West Side of South Bend to Simon and Zofia Piatkowski on January 12, 1927 the youngest of six children. His sisters and brothers, Adam, Eddie, Bill, Gladys Szklarek and Genevieve Zurath have all passed before him. He was the proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren with two more expected soon. Joe began his career at Bendix Missal in Mishawaka delivering mail to the offices on roller skates at the tender age of 16. He was honorably discharged from the Army on January 29, 1947. He retired after 30 years at the age of 46. On May 7, 1949 he married the love of his life, Jennie Pawlowski in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. She preceded him in death after 60 years of marriage, on September 5, 2009. With the help of his brothers, he built his own limestone home on S. Main Street, Mishawaka. Together, Jennie and Joe raised three daughters, Kathy (Ward) Underwood, Debbie (Donald) Bauters (deceased) and Peggy (Gary) Foldenauer. Like his namesake, St. Joseph the Carpenter, Dad loved woodworking. He could look at a piece of furniture, go home draw up a scale replica and construct it with every detail. Mom and Dad traveled the US in their motor home from the West Coast to the East. Disney World was the favorite destination for all the grandchildren and Vegas with the “grownup's” choice. Joe was an avid sports fan and loved Notre Dame, the Cubs and the Bulls right along with Jennie. We'd like to thank the staff at Sanctuary at St. Paul's for their loving care. A Mass of Christian Burial will on Tuesday, December 27 at 11 a.m., with visitation an hour prior, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Graveside service with Military Rites will be held in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. To leave the family an online condolence, please visit our website at www.hahnfuneralhomes.com.
