James P. Rachan, 47, residing in South Bend, Indiana, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at his residence. He was born in Munster, West Germany on October 2, 1974 to James F. Rachan and Paule C. (Hatton) Rachan, who both survive. He attended Merrillville High School in Merrillville, Indiana. James was a tremendously talented artist. He loved drawing mythical creatures and landscapes. Music played an important role in his life and he loved it loud. He enjoyed writing stories and spending time with his family. Holiday gatherings were a favorite pastime for James. At the young age of sixteen, James was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. This horrible, debilitating disease robbed our James of any chance at a normal life.Along with his parents, James is survived by his sister, Claudine (Aaron) Miller of Mishawaka; and his two nephews, Ian Miller and Devin Miller, both of Mishawaka. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles and cousins, both in the United States and United Kingdom. James is preceded in death by his grandparents, Marjorie (Salisbury) Gurnell and James M. Rachan; and Christiane (Bellynck) Hatton and George E. Hatton. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2021 at Palmer Funeral Homes - Welsheimer Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46616 with visitation one hour prior. Friends may gather with the family from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 28, 2021 at Palmer Funeral Homes - Welsheimer Chapel. Refreshments will be served both days. Memorials may be made to Evansville State Hospital/Patients Rec Fund 3400 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714. Palmer Funeral Homes - River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
