May 9, 1948 - April 19, 2022

Paule Christiane Rachan, 73, residing in Elkhart, Indiana, unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday evening, April 19, 2022 at her residence. She was born in Calais, France on May 9, 1948 to the late George E. and Christiane (Bellynck) Hatton. Paule was also preceded in death by her son, James P. Rachan. On June 28, 1968, Paule married James F. Rachan at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Preston, England. He survives along with their daughter, Claudine (Aaron) Miller; and grandsons, Ian and Devin Miller. Also surviving are Paule’s younger brothers, George Hatton, Eric Hatton and Phillip Hatton, all residing in England. She also leaves behind several family members in England, France, New Zealand and the United States. Paule was raised in a military family and moved several times throughout her childhood and teen years. She attended school in Germany, Malaysia, Egypt and England. As a young adult, in Preston, England, she was a cafeteria manager and, after marriage, went on to work as a preschool teacher in Aldershot, England. She was adored by the children and well respected by the parents. Prior to immigrating to the United States, Paule worked at The Queen’s Hotel in Farnborough, England, managing the bar. During this time she also managed several departments at the Lakeside Country Club in North Camp, England. Family gatherings, especially Christmas, that included home cooked meals and board games were held close to her heart. Paule adored her grandsons, Ian and Devin, and played an influential part in their upbringing from babies to young men. Throughout most of her life, Paule was an avid reader, an enthusiastic gardener and a talented cook. She enjoyed knitting children’s clothes and dolls, which she frequently donated to charities. In the last few years of her life, Paule enjoyed “girls” weekends and outings with her daughter, Claudine. They would travel to a variety of different places and enjoy ice cream treats. A fan of Formula One racing, Paule enthusiastically rooted for her favorite driver, Max Verstappen. Her husband, James, would record the early morning races so she wouldn’t miss a lap. A Celebration of Life will be from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2022, in Palmer Funeral Home - Welsheimer Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46616.
