MISHAWAKA - Joseph M. Bortone Jr., 80, passed away peacefully in his home early Wednesday, November 28. Joseph was born on June 17, 1932 in Mishawaka to Joseph M. and Florence (Sutter) Bortone Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandma, Mary Sutter; a sister, Charlene Van Overberghe and a brother-in-law, Walter Rhodes. Joseph attended St. Joseph Catholic grade school and Mishawaka High School class of 1951. He was a member of Dodge Athletic Association and Mishawaka Alumni Club, Quarter Century Club of Dodge Manufacturing, and Four Lakes Country Club. He retired from Dodge Reliance after 40 years of service and was co-owner of Celebrations Unlimited in Mishawaka, retiring in 1991. He received his Industrial Engineering degree from Wittenberg University. On November 28, 1959 in South Bend, he married Mary Ann Rhodes. He is survived by his loving devoted wife of 53 years, Mary Ann; three sons, Doug Bortone of Greer, SC, Greg Bortone of Mishawaka and Bruce Bortone of South Bend; a daughter-in-law, Millie (David) Hack of South Bend; a brother, Richard (Barbara) Bortone of South Bend; five grandchildren, Chris (Rachel) Bortone, Michael (Christy) Bortone, Sarah Bortone, Gretel (Jay) O'Connor and Chase (Jamie) Bortone; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Audrey (Henry) Gizewski of Osceola; & sisters-in-law, Sophie Rhodes and Jean Rhodes both of South Bend. Also surviving are special niece, Linda (Larry) Rodino and special nephew, Terry (Tammy) Gizewski, along with several other nieces and nephews; good friends, Charlotte Lauer, Judy and Chuck Bare, and his dog Daisy. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling, traveling, and going to his grandchildren and great grandchildren's baseball and football games. He loved his ice cream and the family cottage at Garver Lake. He also enjoyed many trips to Myrtle Beach with his family and friends. A special Thank You to Dr. Barbour, Harbor Light Hospice, Jeanine Campbell, Nora Lewis, Sue Hartwick and the many, many friends who helped us through this dreadful disease of Alzheimer's. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 2 in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be in the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 3 with Rev. Erv Mize officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
