Alex Udvardy
Sept. 25, 1924 - May 29, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Alex S. Udvardy, 90, passed away at 11:50 am Friday, May 29, 2015 in his residence. Alex was born on September 25, 1924 in South Bend to Alex and Rose (Arr) Udvardy. He was employed by Studebaker for 20 years and retired in 1985 from Allied Signal. Alex was a member of the American Legion Post 50 and was a World War II Army veteran, being a part of the D-Day Invasion. On November 27, 1948 in South Bend he married Geraldine "Gerry" V. Korpal. She died on April 27, 2015. Alex was also preceded in death by two sisters, Rosemary Udvardy and Irene Nagy, and a brother, Louis Udvardy. Surviving are a son, Stephen (Rita) Udvardy of North Liberty; three grandchildren, Kyle (Jill) Bach, Colette Udvardy, and Connor Udvardy; six great-grandchildren, Maddux, Molly, Nicholas, Turner, Maddie and Kate; a sister, Violet Woltman, and nieces and nephews. Eighteen months ago, Alex was bedridden after being released from the hospital due to congestive heart failure and was told he had only a short time left on this earth. Knowing that his beloved wife was in declining health herself, he vowed to become strong enough to take care of her. Being the determined, hard-working, head-strong man that he was, he willed himself back to a healthy state and did just that. He took over all the household tasks that she had managed so beautifully over their entire marriage. He cooked, did laundry and cared for her. He remained at her side until the moment of her death just over a month ago. His health began a quick decline from that moment on, as if he had fulfilled his final mission in life. His only wish at that point was to he remain in the home that he and his soul mate had shared. This wish was fulfilled as he passed away peacefully on the recliner in his living room. A stronger man and more of a hero would be hard to find. Those of us who were blessed to know him were given a precious gift. Funeral services will be celebrated at 12:00 pm Friday, June 5, 2015 in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00 am until time of services in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Center for Hospice.
