SOUTH BEND - Larry A. Gildner, 65, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in his home surrounded by his family. Larry was born on December 29, 1943, in Mishawaka, to Richard and Martha (Compton) Gildner. He was preceded in death by his mother. On October 19, 1968, he married Sandra (DeMeyer) Gildner, who survives along with their children, Mark (Julie) Gildner of Mishawaka, Gary (Gail) Landuyt of South Bend, Suzanne (Stan) Balcom of Minooka, IL, and Dennis (Stacey) Landuyt of Columbus, OH; 13 grandchildren, Amanda (Steve) Holbert, Cole (Mandi) Landuyt, Ryan (Amy) Beheyt, Gabriel Beheyt, Zachary Landuyt, Katlyn (Rob) Ness, Lauren Landuyt, Kyle Gildner, Kelsey Landuyt, Claire Landuyt, Jenna Landuyt, Zoie Landuyt and Sarah Landuyt; two great-grandchildren, and one on-the-way; sister, Janis (Jim Trulock) Gildner; and by his father, Richard Gildner. Larry retired from the South Bend Fire Department in 1991 after 21 years of service to our community. He then was a contract bus driver for the South Bend School Corporation for 18 years. He owned an auto body shop for many years; Larry often used his creative talent to build or fix almost anything. He also enjoyed restoring antiques. Larry enjoyed his family and spending time with them. He also was anticipating the birth of his third great-grandchild. Larry was a member of South Bend Fire Fighters Local 362 and St. Joseph County Bus Drivers Association. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. Donations may be made to Center for Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the American Cancer Society , P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2009, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. Funeral services will be celebrated on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
