SOUTH BEND - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death, from an apparent heart attack, of our beloved son, Jeffrey Lee Zakrowski, 44. Jeff lived for the past several years in the capitol city of Laos, Vientiane, where he taught English and worked at the local newspaper editing the written word. Jeff was born in South Bend, Indiana, on April 14, 1972, to Thomas Lee Zakrowski and the former Susan Shultz (Susan Loughridge). He graduated from John Adams High School in 1990 where he worked on the Adams HS Literary Magazine, sang (Dylan, James Taylor, Led Zeppelin), played guitar and collected many friends. He earned a BS in Psychology from Indiana University and then began his travels West. Jeff lived and worked in Salt Lake City, Utah, Portland, Oregon, San Jose, California, and Yosemite National Park where he continued to collect friends, sing and play guitar. While working at Yosemite, he met a young man who suggested Jeff move to Asia to teach English, which he did. He worked in South Korea, Thailand and ultimately in Laos. He was a philosopher, an adventurer, and a generous and kind man with a smile that lit up a room. His father just returned from a once-in-a-lifetime visit with Jeff. They toured Laos on motorcycles and on their last day, Tom observed Jeff teaching class. How fortunate they both were to have had this time together. His memory will be cherished by his father, Tom Zakrowski of South Bend; his mother and her husband, Sue (Greg) Loughridge of Chandler, Arizona; his sister and her husband, Jennifer (Mike) Whitaker, and their children, Dakota and Jasper, all of Boulder, Colorado; his grandmother, Betty Goodwin of South Bend, Indiana; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. The family will host a celebration of Jeff's life in May. Details are pending. Funeral services will be held in Laos.
