Doris Samarich, 86, of Mishawaka, passed away Saturday morning, October 14, 2006, in her home. She was born September 21, 1920, in Yugoslavia as the daughter of Spasoje and Mildred Vaskovich, and moved to this area when she was eighteen months old. She graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School. In February 1940, in South Bend, as Doris Vaskovich, she married Branko Samarich. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1973. A sister, Dorothy Vaskovich, and her beloved daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Vitou) Samarich preceded her in death. Mrs. Samarich is survived by three daughters, Mitzi Rickhoff of South Bend, Sally Lynn Sprong of Michigan City, IN, and Judy (Al) DeDonato of Mishawaka; and two sons, John (Jill) Samarich and Millard (the late Cheryl) Samarich, both of South Bend. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, Michael Samarich, Robert (Melissa) Samarich, Brian Litherland, Kim (Rich) Fontana, B.J. (Christine) Sprong, Melanie Marosz, Gina (Nick) Nichols, Bethany (Josh) DeDonato, Tony (Tori) DeDonato, David (Michelle) Samarich, and Angela (David) Samarich; twenty-one great-grandchildren, Johnny, Bobby, and Jordan Samarich, Aaron, Brianne and Jacob Litherland, Mattie Fontana, Brendon, Alexis, and Brittney Sprong, Jennifer, Adrianne, and Whitney Marosz, Amber and Ethan Nichols, Nicolas, Zoe, Josh and Joey DeDonato, and Tony Jr., and Briana DeDonato; and a brother, Walter Vukovich of Chicago, IL. Doris retired in 1985 as a proofreader from Ava Maria Press at the University of Notre Dame. She was a member of St. Peter and St. Paul Serbian Orthodox Church. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2006, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Ed Erskin will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 17, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park.
