Robert J. Piech, 83, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 8:25am Wednesday, June 21, 2006 in Regency Place of South Bend. He was born on June 9, 1923 to the late Frank and Anna (Bykowski) Piech in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with his parents; one sister, Ethel Mae Winkowski; and two brothers, Edward Piech and Thomas Piech also preceded him in death. Mr. Piech retired as an inspector from the Bendix Corporation, after 38 years of employment. On March 4, 1967, he married Dorothy M. McMurtrie in South Bend, IN. She survives.Along with his loving wife Dorothy of 39 years; he is survived by one daughter, Carol A. Sobieski of South Bend, IN; one son, Joseph R. Piech of South Bend, IN; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one sister, Ann Hoffman of South Bend, IN; and one brother, Frank Piech of South Bend, IN. Mr. Piech was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 8748 and the American Legion Post No. 50. He was also a member of Bowler?s Country Club, Fitness U.S.A. Health Club, and United Auto Workers Union #9. Robert was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan. Visitation will be from 9-11am Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Kaniewski Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Winkowski officiating. Military Services will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 50. Cremation will follow. Burial will take place at Highland Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to: American Heart Association, Greater Midwest Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Lockbox, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, Il 60674.
