NILES - Albert C. Heyvaert, 81, of Niles, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, September 19, 2013, in Lakeland Hospital, Niles. Albert known to many as "Al" or "Uncle Al" was born April 19, 1932 in South Bend, a son of the late Pete and Bernice Heyvaert. He grew up in South Bend and was a graduate of St. Joseph High School. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Al's career was always in the RV Industry. At one time he owned and operated Intrepid Inc. Al attended Christ the King Catholic Church in South Bend. He had a love for the University of Notre Dame and was an avid Fighting Irish Football fan. Al enjoyed playing the piano and was a great singer entertaining many in the Michiana area over the years. He was well-read and was a great history buff. He was a patriotic American who dearly loved his country. Al's surviving family includes three children, Jeffrey (Kathy) Willard of Elkhart, Mike (Denise) Heyvaert of Granger and Michelle Heyvaert of Warsaw; a brother, John (Ruth) Heyvaert of Colorado; grandchildren, Bryce Willard, Kyle Willard, Craig Willard, Dylan Heyvaert, Lindsay Heyvaert and Sam Heyvaert; and one great grandchild. Al was preceded in death by his former wife and mother of his children, Sharron; his second wife, Delores; a son, Thomas Willard; and a sister, Jan Vigeant. Services honoring Al's life will be held Sunday at 4 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka. Cremation will follow. Al's family will receive friends Sunday from 3 - 4 pm in the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
