DeVon E. Truex
Aug. 22, 1925 - July 21, 2016
MISHAWAKA - DeVon E. Truex, 90, passed away on July 21, 2016 in the Golden Living Center at Fountainview Place, Mishawaka, of natural causes. DeVon was born to Harvey and Edna (Sylvester) Truex, of Wakarusa on Aug. 22, 1925. Surviving is his loving wife of 71 years, Betty J. (Von Gruenigen) Truex; their daughter, Becky (Larry) Penn of Mishawaka, along with his siblings; Alva, Richard, Ronald (Ann), and George (Iva) Truex of Wakarusa, Joan (Roger) Ramer of Goshen and Berniece Layman of Dowagiac, Mich. Also several nieces and nephews survive. DeVon and Betty are the proud grandparents of three, Wendy (Jason) of Indianapolis, Don (Carolyn) of Indianapolis, and Brian (Angie) of Granger, and great-grandparents of six. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Edna. DeVon proudly served in the United States Army in World War II, and he was a life-time member of the Bremen VFW Post 8972. He married Betty on Feb. 3, 1945 and after returning from the war, set up a family farm where they lived for 65 years. Farming was his primary occupation, raising a variety of both animals and fowl. Other jobs he held over his lifetime were as a Supervisor of Edwards Iron Works in South Bend; a welder for Fox Steel Mfg. and transporting RV's to various states. He was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman; and was very proud of vegetable gardens he and Betty grew. In later years, his life revolved around spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, spoiling them with candy and cookies he would bake for them. "Tiger" was well known in the Bremen community. His wit and big smile immediately made him many friends. He held leadership roles in the Bremen Masonic Lodge, The Order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, and as a Shriner. He is especially remembered for his card playing with buddies at various locations he frequented in Bremen. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 S.R. 331, Bremen. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Bubb Funeral Chapel assisted the family with arrangements. The family wishes to thank the care provided by the staff, nurses and doctors at Golden Living Center at Fountainview Place. Also thanking AseraCare Hospice group who provided comfort and loving concern. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Ave, Chicago, IL 60707, or to AseraCare Hospice of Elkhart, 700 E. Beardsley Ave. Ste. 2B, Elkhart, IN 46514.
