Nicholas Budnik, a succesful merchant in South Bend's Chapin Street shopping district, was born in Poland, August 25 1870, where he aquired his schooling. He studied hard and had an insatiable desire to come to the United States. This desire he realised in the year 1884 when he came to the land of freedom bringing with him his mother, Katherine, his sister Mary, and his brother Peter. His brother Marcin had come to the United States earlier and is deceased. Another brother John came over later. He was heard of last in the icy land of Alaska, being on a trip for his health. Peter went to school in South Bend and is now a Polish Priest, having a very desirable Parish in East Chicago. Mr. Budniks mother and sister are with him in his South Bend residence. When he first came here he obtained work at the Studebaker factory at the rate of $0.35 per day and at the time of his resignation was getting $1.35 per day. He then became a clerk in a local grocery store, where he remained for about thirthteen years, gaining a thoughh knowledge of the business and starting in business for himself. He was married on November 6, 1894 to Miss Anna Woodka, sister og the Woodka brothers, business men of South Bend.
He is now the father of six children. He is affiliated with the F.O.E. and M.W.A. and is a charter member of the Polish Falcons. St Stanislaus Society, St Michael Society, and St Hedwig Choir.
