SOUTH BEND - Elsie M. (Bielski) Downhour, 83 of South Bend passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka with her family by her side. She was born on December 17, 1934 in Michigan City, IN to the late Jay and Addie (Allinger) Hull. On April 21, 1962 in South Bend she married Eugene F. Downhour who preceded her in death on February 14, 2007. Elsie is survived by her two daughters, Anita M. (Howard) Davis and Katrina G. Sinclair both of South Bend; two step sons, Kirk E. Downhour and Kent E. Downhour both of South Bend; twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a sister, Edna M. Davis of San Antonio, TX.She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Brianna Rose and Corey Downhour, a foster sister, Betty G. Hull and her two brothers, George M. Bielski and Neil M. Bielski. Elsie retired from 1st Source Bank in 1992 after many years of service as a bookkeeper. She was a member of the Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church and the Greene Township Lion's Club. She received the Melvin James Award in 2005 and was Lion of the Year in 2006. She was an avid Notre Dame Football and Chicago Cubs fan, she enjoyed watching the Sports Channel and the Gameshow Network Channel. She loved doing Word Search Puzzle Books, bowling and going to the Coffee Mug Restaurant with her friends. Elsie was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel” located at State Road 23/W. Ireland Road, South Bend. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church, 24535 Roosevelt Road, South Bend. Friends may visit one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church, 24535 Roosevelt Road, South Bend, IN 46614 or Greene Township Lions Club, 61271 Poppy Road, South Bend, IN 46614.
