Joan Marie Cenkush, 92, residing in Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at her residence. Joan was born on November 19, 1929 in Twelve Mile, Indiana to Charles R. Yankee and Inez M. (Lutz) Yankee, who both preceded her in death. She received her GED after having her children. Joan worked as a certified respiratory therapist for twelve years and worked at Memorial Hospital as a scrub tech who passed instruments to surgeons for nineteen years. Joan was passionate about many things. She wrote poetry and read her poems in local cafes, she painted and drew pictures. On November 22, 1952, in South Bend, Joan was united in marriage to James S. Cenkush, who has preceded her in death. Joan is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Mike) Yates of Mishawaka; her sons, James Cenkush of Valparaiso and Ronald (Mary) Cenkush of Osceola; her son-in-law, Chuck (Deb) Smeyers of Valparaiso; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by Rhonda Adams, Loving Family Confidant. Along with her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by her daughters, Beckey Smyers and Victoria Melville; her son, Dennis Fusion; her sister, Donazetta Balsbaugh; her brother, Nelson Yankee. Friends may gather with the family Tuesday, February 8, 2022 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Palmer Funeral Homes - River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN 46615. Funeral services for Joan will be held Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at First Baptist Church of Mishawaka, 724 N Main St, Mishawaka, IN 46545. A luncheon will follow services at the church. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545 and First Baptist Church of Mishawaka.
