Mishawaka- Albert Martin Nemes, 96, of Wakarusa, formerly of Mishawaka, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Miller's Merry Manor in Wakarusa, IN. Know to everyone as Al, he was born on February 7, 1915 in South Bend to the late Gyorgyy and Maria (Sestak) Nemes. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Andrew and George Nemes and sisters, Mary Weiss, Helen Redling, Gizella Nemes, Rose Nemes and Elizabeth Kadlec. On December 2, 1939 Al married Leona DeGeyter in Mishawaka and they enjoyed 68 years together before her passing on January 7, 2008. Surviving Albert is one daughter, Joan (Tim) Cook of Ft. Collins, CO; four sons, Albert (Marilynn) Nemes of Littleton, CO; Robert (Terry) Nemes of Cape Coral, FL; Ken (Carolyn) Nemes of Mishawaka and Kurt (Laura Zam) of Washington, D.C.; eleven grandchildren: Danielle Cook, Karen Nemes, Kimberly Garfield, Spencer Cook, Michelle Guthrie, John Nemes, Katherine Robinson, Cassie Nemes, Michael Nemes, Claire Nemes and Simone Nemes; seven great grandchildren and one brother, Joseph Nemes of South Bend. As a boy growing up in the Great Depression, Al had to leave school to help support his family. He worked as a printer before landing a job at Studebake's automobile plant in South Bend where his two other brothers and father also worked. After 29 years, when Studebaker's left South Bend, Al went to work at Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka until his retirement. An avid reader, Al loved western novels, the Bible and history. In the 1960's, Al and Leona earned their GED degree and he always expressed the need for a good education to his children. Al enjoyed community service and had many interests. He was a Cub Scout master at Kennedy School, a Boy Scout master at the Mishawaka Conservation Club and a charter member of the North Penn Fire Department and served as a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and camping, especially in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Al was a passionate gardener, an expert carpenter and he could fix anything. He loved telling stories about his childhood as well as tales of the Old West. He was much loved by his family and a large circle of friends. Al and Leona also enjoyed square dancing locally and on a national level and spent an active retirement in Tucson, AZ for 20 years. In 2000 they returned to Mishawaka to be closer to family. Al and Leona could be seen often at the South Bend YMCA where they exercised several times a week until just a few years ago. The Nemes family expresses their deep appreciation to all of the caregivers at Miller's Merry Manor in Wakarusa. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, Oct. 4th from 5-8 at the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St. Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bavo Catholic Church with the Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Fairview Cemetery.
