SOUTH BEND - Richard “Troy” Mrozinski
The honorary Mayor? Greeter of Brookdale Senior Living Center formerly Emeritus @ Arborwood in Granger, Indiana, is now holding court in heaven. “Richard, Troy, Dick Mrozinski” (However you referred to him) passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016. He would have been ‘98' on November 8.Why the name “Troy” ??? He wanted to be a boxer--- his mom said “No.” What is a boy to do? You change your name to Troy Bellini (Not officially, of course) Why that name, who knows? Was he any good? Depends on who is telling the story! After graduation, he went to work for the Studebaker Corporation and subsequently with the South Bend Community School Corporation serving Navarre School until the end of his career which included having candy for the kids, paying for an occasional lunch, and playing Santa. He was born on November 8, 1918, and went to be united with his beloved and patient Natalie on October 14, 2016. He and Natalie Grzesk were united in Marriage on November 28, 1942, in St. Stanislaus B.M. Catholic Church in South Bend. After retirement, he attended Mass five days a week after his routine of swimming five days a week at the South Bend YMCA with Coffee and Conversation Following. What started out after retiring, for having something to do and keeping involved, turned out to be a ritual which extended for 30 years and logging 5,825 miles in the pool. He was very proud of this accomplishment and had the trophies to prove it. He never knew a stranger--- Always willing to help and show the new residents “The Ropes”. The man with the perpetual Christmas tree, and the greeting “How about A Beer” or “How about a Root Beer?” He was preceded in death by his wife “Nat” who passed away on November 21, 2008. He missed her deeply and spoke of her fondly and often. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Harry, Eugene, and Stanley. Survivors include his daughter, Carol Ann Goodell (Harold) of Dowagiac, Michigan, step-grandchildren: Wendy (Star Shine) Ferguson (Leonard) of Northville, Michigan, and Nicholas Goodell (Martha) of St. Joseph, Michigan. Step-great-grandchildren: Jack and Elise Ferguson, Carolina Garaza, Matthew and Lauren Goodell; and former daughter-in-law, Ann Marie Goodell. Never forgetting “Uncle Troy” is Father Ronald (Ronnie) Mrozinski, Paula and Jim Szekendi, Jerry Wroblewski, Wally Mucha, Mary Ann Cofer, Mary Lou Mucha, Michael Roman, and the late Jimmy Mucha and Joanne Roman (Who left us too soon.) Heartful thanks to the following people who enriched the life of ‘Richard, Troy, Dick Mrozinski.” Bill Pelander: Creator of the “Birthday Card Bash Flyer' which Generated 50 to 75 cards each year for the last ten years! How he loved those cards and the bragging rights that came along with them! Al and Sharon Mott: Generously provided the birthday party entertainment each and every birthday since he turned 90. Karen Alford Peay: Ready and willing in less than a moment's notice to run errands. James Hannah: Dedicated and watchful neighbor, grass cutter, and snow removal man. Chuck and Earline Jones: Very Frequent Visitors; very long time and faithful. Mike and Mary Rios: No task too big, no request too bizarre; very loving friends who thought of him as their Grandpa and would do anything for him. Kirby Falkenberg, Bob Edwards, Jack Rothe and too many to list from the YMCA. Two wonderful ladies, Bonnie Hauser and Lisa Williams established a long and loving relationship during his stay at Arborwood. They showered him with notes, cards, Trinkets and especially those most important visits. Nurse Cindy Dell welcomed him when he first arrived at Arborwood ten years ago and continues to be a loving friend. There are not enough adjectives to express the appreciation for the attention he received on a daily basis. He was surrounded in a loving and caring environment by the wonderful staff until his passing. A celebration of life service (And what a long and healthy life it was) will be at 11:00 A.M on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend, with the Reverand Ronald Mrozinski officiating. There will be an hour of visitation prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, State Road 2, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to The Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department, 33104 M 62 West, Dowagiac, Michigan 49047; or to The YMCA of Michiana (Youth Program), 1201 Northside Boulevard, South Bend, Indiana 46615. No matter what name you called him, “Richard”, “Troy”, or “Dick”-You can always remember him by his famous greetings and good byes---- “Once A Friend” “Always A Friend” & Keep Smiling.
