Mr. Rudolph C. “Rudy” Conjalka, 77, of LaPorte, died at 4:35 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at LaPorte Hospital. He was born Oct. 9, 1931, in Rolling Prairie, IN, to Louis and Sophie (Urbanick) Conjalka. Mr. Conjalka was an operating engineer for Union Local 150. He was a member of Operating Engineers/Local Union 150, LaPorte FOP and LaPorte American Legion Post 83. He was a U.S. veteran of the Korean War. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and loved to garden, work in his garage and hang out at Bill’s. He was dearly loved by his many friends and will be missed. On March 7, 1956, in St. Joseph, MI, he married Janet L. Sawyer, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Cynthia (Tom) Marovich of Venice, FL, and Peggy (Mark) Malstaff of LaPorte; three grandchildren, Megan, Matthew and Paige; one sister, Joan Wozniak of Rolling Prairie; and his mother-in-law, Doris Sawyer of LaPorte. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Pamela Conjalka; one sister and seven brothers. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Dennis J. Teles officiating. Visitation will be at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Friday, July 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. and continuing Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, on Saturday following the service. A military graveside service will be conducted by the LaPorte Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 C St., LaPorte, IN, 46350; or to the donor’s choice.
