SOUTH BEND - Solon Thomas Orfanos, 80, of Harrison, OH, formerly of South Bend, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday March 7, in Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, following a brief illness. Mr. Orfanos was born August 18, 1926, in Hammond, IN, to the late Thomas and Alexandra (Tsamingos) Orfanos and had lived in South Bend from 1961 until moving to Harrison in September 2006. On May 1, 1954, in Hammond he married Ruth Young who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Nicki (Robert) Ruetz of South Bend; a son, Thomas S. Orfanos of South Bend; a stepson, Carmel (Ruth) Carroll Jr. of Orlando, FL; four grandchildren, Aaron Orfanos, Arianne Szabo, Autumn (James) Coots and Ryan Thomas; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Coots; and two sisters-in-law, Opal Jost of South Bend and Vivian Orfanos of Bloomington, IN. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Billy Wayne Carroll; a sister, Virginia Orfanos; and two brothers, George and A. Thomas Orfanos. Mr. Orfanos retired as an inspector for the City of South bend Building Department, but will be best remembered as the proprietor of the former Orfee's Lounge in South Bend. He was a member of St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, and a lifetime member of AHEPA. He was also a member of American Legion Post 50, former VFW Post 624, BPOE Lodge #235, former Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #58 and American Turners. He was also an Army veteran of World War II. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 12 in St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, with Rev. George Konstantopoulous officiating. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 11 in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, where a Trisagion service will be held at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 52455 Ironwood Road, South Bend, IN 46635 or the charity of the donor's choice.
