Mary Carol Prebys Dec. 24, 1925 - Aug. 28, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Mary Carol Schwertley Prebys departed this life before dawn on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014. She was born on Dec. 24, 1925, in South Bend, IN, to the late Paul Jerome Schwertley and Helen Marie Rennoe Schwertley. On Aug. 4, 1950, she married Joseph K. Prebys. He preceded her in death in 1969. Mary is survived by her daughter, Marguerite (Jeffrey) Blue; her son, Andrew Joseph (April) Prebys; five grandchildren, Ryan Prebys, Mary, Helen, Joseh and Heidi Prebys; and several dear friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Patrice Prebys; a son, Christopher Paul Prebys; a sister, Ann Schwertley Seeler; and a brother, Jerome Paul Schwertley. Mary graduated from Saint Mary's College with a degree in Social Work. She was employed by the Department of Public Welfare as a case worker, retiring after 20 years of service. Mary was an avid reader and an amateur naturalist. She also enjoyed gardening, Bridge - Mary was a member of a group that met regularly for over 50 years - and Sam, her favorite doggie and her constant companion. Mary wished to participate in the Anatomical Gift Assocation of Illinois. Arrangements were made by the fuenral home to send her directly to Loyola. A private graveside service will be held at a later date to inter her ashes. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Saint Mary's College Scholarship fund or to the Center for Hospice Care. Mary's greatest legacy to her children was her example of a steadfast faith in God that persevered to the end, and her hope in the Resurrection.
