Obituary: Jeanette W. Zakrzewski

April 15, 1930 -- March 5, 2005
On March 5, Jeanette Zakrzewski, 74, of New Carlisle, entered Heaven, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 15, 1930, in South Bend, Ind., and was the beloved daughter of Adam and Helen Koscielski, who preceded her in death. Jeanette retired from New Prairie United School Corporation after 32 years of dedicated, caring service as a school bus driver. She was also a former private-duty nurse and a certified EMT. She was a 62-year member of the American Legion Post 357, South Bend, and was a member of the DAV Chapter 19, Elkhart. Jeanette thoroughly enjoyed fishing year-round, a lifelong hobby stemming from childhood outings with her father and brother. As wife, mother, sister, and grandmother/busia extraordinaire, her devotion, energy, strength, faith, and sense of humor touched the lives of many. Her greatest joy came from caring for her family, especially her 16 precious grandchildren. On June 25, 1949, she married Stanley Zakrzewski in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend, who survives. She is also survived by her children, Raymond (Pam) Zakrzewski of Chesterton, Daniel (Debbie) Zakrzewski of Michigan, Dr. Debra (David) Mannia, Karen (Dr. Howard) Wiesjahn and Janel (Brett) Zakrzewski-Kuntz, all of New Carlisle, and Sharon (Larry) Neland of North Liberty. She is survived, as well, by her grandchildren, Adam, Katy, and Beth Zakrzewski, Danny and Derek Zakrzewski, Kristen, Paul and Hillary Mannia, Erika, Lauren and Howie Wiesjahn, Lee and Michelle Neland, and Addison, Roman and Helaina Kuntz. In addition, she is survived by her sisters, Alice Lesniewski, Eleanor "Carol" Koscielski and Betty Griffin, all of South Bend. A brother, Dr. Stanley Koscielski, and a sister, Genevieve Koscielski, preceded her in death. The family will welcome friends from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 10, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, New Carlisle. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
