Jeanette A. Thornton
Nov. 24, 1928 - Nov. 27, 2011

MISHAWAKA - Jeanette A. Thornton, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 83, of Mishawaka, passed away on Sunday, November 27th, 2011. Jeanette was born on November 24, 1928, in Mishawaka, to the late Casimir "Charlie" and Mary (Fern) Bohdan. On July 15, 1950, she married William A. Thornton, who passed away on November 4, 1977. She was also preceded in death by a son, John Patrick Thornton, and two brothers, Edward and Walter Bohdan. She is survived by two daughters, Mary J. McKnight (Ron) of Creston, IL, Ann M. Thornton of Mishawaka; and two sons, David W. Thornton of Mishawaka and James J. Thornton (Tina) of Palm Harbor, FL; a sister, Sue Ely of Florida; and a brother, John Bohdan (Carol) of Mishawaka; four grandchildren, Katie Taylor (Rob), Adam Dean, Claire Thornton and Bryan Young; great-grandchildren, Emma and Margaret Dean; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jeanette was an active lifelong member of St. Monica Parish, where she was baptized, graduated, and married. Through hard work and dedication her five children also graduated from St. Monica and Marian High School. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1947 where she was a cheerleader. Jeanette met her future husband at the original Tivoli Theater while working during high school. The family lived for some time in Washington, D.C., and Fort Wayne before returning to Mishawaka. Jeanette's varied work life included the Associates Corporation right after high school, Jerry's Grill in Mishawaka, the Summit Club of South Bend, Notre Dame Catering, and 18 interesting years at the Elks Club,. She became a dedicated care-giver for the residents at St. Paul's Retirement Community where she was the Dining Room Supervisor until her own retirement in 1994. She was devoted to her family, who will cherish the example she set by her genuine, kind nature and positive outlook. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her smile, her work ethic, and always seeing the best in others. Jeanette's strong faith and courage, especially during difficult times, will remain a source of inspiration. The dedicated staff of Golden Living of Mishawaka became her eyes and voice when she could no longer communicate, and this was greatly appreciated by her family. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Monica Catholic Church.
