Helen Margaret Kuharic was born on Crumstown Road (later renamed Crumstown Highway) in South Bend, Indiana to immigrant parents from Croatia. She lived most of her life in the farmhouse her father built. She was married briefly, but had the marriage annulled after several weeks. She remained single the remainder of her life. She only drove white cars and joked that her dream of a sports car would not be practical, as hatboxes would not fit. She repainted the interior of her house annually and kept pairs of never-worn kidskin gloves carefully wrapped in department-store tissue. She looked like a movie star, but wore denim and boots. She kept her engagement portrait at the base of the stairs of her house and liked showing visitors a small, framed picture of herself wearing one of her signature hats, which she made.
Helen loved rural life and traditions. She talked about dandelion wine and how the house she was born and lived in changed over the years. To her, the house's indoor bathroom was still a new improvement. She valued evergreens, irises, apple blossoms, antique cars, grapes, and peppermint farms.

SOUTH BEND - Helen Margaret Kuharic, 86, passed peacefully away on July 5, 2010, in the Holy Cross Rehabilitation Center, South Bend, Indiana. A lifelong area resident, she was born in South Bend and resided in her family residence. She spent her working life in the employ of Indiana Bell Telephone. She is survived by her brother, John M. Kuharic of Mishawaka, and her sister, Margaret H. Gobel, of San Diego, as well as 15 nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation for family and friends at Saint Joseph Funeral Home at 824 South Mayflower Road, South Bend, on Friday, July 16th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. For those who are unable to attend the funeral liturgy, condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
