ELKHART -- Harold C. "Blacky the Telephone Man" Black, 84, of Elkhart, died Tuesday (July 28, 2009) in Golden Living Center. He was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Constantine, Mich., to Earl and Mildred Mable (Ott) Black. On Sept. 7, 1946, he married Julia A. Kovatch in Fort Wayne. She survives along with one son, Timothy (Brenda) Black of Decatur, Mich.; two daughters, Jill Black of Bloomington and Barbara (Curtis) Hull of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; six grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Loraine Witwer of Elkhart. One sister, Elenor Gajewski, preceded him in death. Mr. Black retired from GTE after 40 years of service as an electronic technician. For the last 10 years of his employment with GTE, he worked at Miles Laboratories. After retirement he worked at KLF Communications, South Bend, for seven years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater when his anti-aircraft artillery company was attached to the First Army. He received the American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and four Bronze Stars for landing in Omaha Beach, liberating Paris, the Battle of the Bulge and for crossing the Rhine River. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Mr. Black had been a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church since 1947. He was also a member of the church's Holy Name Society, and a third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was named knight of the year in 2003 for distinguished service. He was a member of the Goshen VFW. Mr. Black was an accomplished artist who donated and painted the statues of Mary and the saints that stand in front of St. Vincent de Paul School. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call a half-hour prior to Saturday's 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Vincent de Paul, 1108 S. Main St., Elkhart. The Rev. Phil DeVolder will officiate. Graveside services and burial with full military honors rendered by the U.S. Army Burial Detail and DAV Chapter 19 will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church or The Salvation Army, 300 N. Main St., Elkhart, IN 46516
