SOUTH BEND - Robert S. Janowiak, 83, of South Bend, IN, passed away on his mother's birthday, Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 4:27 p.m. Robert was born on October 22, 1927 in South Bend to Stanley and Hattie (Wozny) Janowiak, and was a lifelong resident. He retired from the South Bend Fire Department in 1982 after 26 years as a firefighter and inspector. He had also been employed with the former Studebaker Corporation for 10 years. On June 5, 1954, in Sacred Heart Church, LaPorte, IN, he married Helen T. Chmielowiec, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Elaine (Robert) Hoff of Grand Rapids, MI and Diane (Tim) Griffin of South Bend, IN; six grandchildren, Philip Hoff, Ben (Kaarin) Hoff, Eliott Hoff, Amy Hoff, Brandon Kusz, and Robbie Kusz; and one brother, Leonard Johns of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Robert was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Richard Janowiak. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 26, 2011 in Corpus Christi Church. Private entombment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Sunday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive where a parish rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. Robert was a member of Corpus Christi Parish. He was a Korean War Veteran and a member of the American Legion Post #50. The family would like to extend a "special thank you" to Robert's caregiver, Pam Lamb and Hospice Nurse Chris. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice.
