ELKHART - Charles Edmund Lauer, 75, of South Bend, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with cancer on December 2, 2013, in the comforts of his son's home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Clara Lauer, and his sister, Jeannette Rzeszewski, all of South Bend. He is survived by his four children: David (Donna) Lauer, Carlotta Santa (Rick Ness), James (Linda) Lauer and Michael (Maureen) Lauer; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews. Charles graduated from Central High School in South Bend. He was an avid car lover, so much so that he was a mechanic and pit crew member for Drewery's 88 special Indy car in '57 and '58 and for Ed Hoffman's 1 late model short track through the seventies. He was also a master mechanic and instructor for Mercedes Benz of North America for many years. There wasn't a person he didn't meet that he didn't put a smile on their face with his unique sense of humor. The family will be hosting a memorial service in memory of Chuck on Saturday, December 14, 2013; at 1 pm at Crumstown Conservation Club, 59440 Crumstown Hwy., North Liberty, IN 46554. The eulogy will begin at 2 pm, with reception to follow. The family requests that any desired memorial contributions be made to the Center for Hospice Care in the name of Chuck .
