SOUTH BEND - Joseph Simeri, 91, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2016 in Avondale, AZ with family at his side. He was born on February 27, 1924 in South Bend, Indiana, the first born son of Rocco and Rosa (Linarello) Simeri, both of whom had immigrated to the United States from Calabria, Italy. Joseph served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 during World War II aboard the USS Tinsman. On May 12, 1956, he married Rosalie Arden in South Bend, where they raised their children. Joseph worked for many years as an operating engineer for Sollitt Construction Company. He was a skilled crane operator, working on numerous construction projects around the city. He was a proud union member of Midwest Operating Engineers, and even served on the board of directors of MOE Local 150. In his spare time, he enjoyed fixing up his many rental properties, spending time in his garage, gardening, reading his newspaper and listening to oldies on the radio. Most of all, he loved Notre Dame football. He was a proud season ticket holder to Fighting Irish games at Notre Dame University. Following his retirement, he moved to Arizona with his wife to be closer to children and grandchildren. Joseph is preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie; his parents, Rocco and Rosa Simeri; his brothers, Nicholas, Albert and Patrick Simeri; and daughters, Linda Sara and Diana Bloom. He is survived by his sons, Rocco, Patrick and Joseph Simeri; daughters, Shirley Schoaf and Cindy Dilla; his brother, Rocco Simeri Jr.; his sister, Rose Mary (Simeri) Wray, sixteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
