Gary Freet
June 21, 1946 - May 4, 2012
OSCEOLA - Gary Freet, 65, of Osceola, passed away in his home on Friday. Gary was a kind, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family. He embraced life at his own pace, content with the simpler things of this world, finding joy in time spent with friends and family. His quiet nature often belied his sense of humor, which always brought a laugh from close friends and family. He was a true source of inspiration in the battles of life he had fought, showing incredible resolve, resiliency and faith in God, even in his final moments. Gary, sometimes affectionately known as "George," had a love for oldies music, classic cars, fishing, mushroom hunting, going to the races and spending winters in Florida. Gary was an amazing grandfather, always making time to attend the sporting or school events of his grandchildren. Gary was born to Ira and Wilma Freet (who preceded him in death), and graduated from Penn High School, Class of 1964, where he lettered in basketball, playing on one of Penn's first 20-win season teams. He was always proud of being a Penn Kingsmen and rooted for all their teams. After graduation, Gary worked for C.G. Conn in Elkhart and then, for over 30 years, at Coca-Cola in South Bend, eventually retiring from Martin's Supermarkets. He is survived by his loving wife, Bev; daughters, Sherrie Sicks, Tammy Briggs and Karen Nowicki; and sons, Jay (Beth) Freet and Tim (Salina) Freet. Also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Cory (Katelyn) Freet, Amber and Collin Freet, Ryan Shriver, and Brandon and Breanne Dodge, as well as his great-grandchildren, Torin and Cambria Freet. He is also survived by many cousins whom he considered to be just like brothers. Gary was preceded in death by his second wife, Fran; a grandson, Dani; and a brother, Don. Friends and family may share their memories during visitation at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka, on Monday, May 7th, from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 8th, in the funeral chapel at 10 am, with Pastor Jeremy LeVan officiating; burial is to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka. Memorial contributions may be made in Gary's name to the Penn High School Athletic Boosters. Published in South Bend Tribune on May 6, 2012 .
