Refer to Rose's memorial for their shared biography.
After Rose died in 1914, Michael left South Bend. He returned briefly in July of 1927, and then left again. At the time of the 1930 and 1940 censuses, he was a resident of the county home in Oneida County, Wisconsin. He had anglicized his last name to Ashman, 'popiel' being the word in Polish for ash. Rhinelander Daily News, Thurs., Oct. 4, 1945:
"Aged Man Dies in County Home"
"Michael Ashman, a resident of the county home, died in the home yesterday. He was born in Poland on Sept. 18, 1860.
"The body is being sent to South Bend, Ind., for burial. Mr. Ashman has several children living there." The Cedar Grove Cemetery interment records for 1945 include Michael Ashman, 85, of Rhinelander, Wisc., died 10/3/1945, and was interred 10/5/1945 in lot 357 of section A. The lot card, as microfilmed in 1989, notes that the lot, age, and date for Michael R. Popielski match those of Michael Ashman in the interment record.
