STEVE BAGARUS
Born 19 Jun 1919; d] 16 Oct 1981, age 62 of Gaithersburg MD, formerly of SBd. Had been ill for 5 mon. Employed as a salesman for King Pontiac of MD, and had lived in So Bend until 1945. He spent 5 years in the US Army. Was drafted by the Washington Redskins Professional football team. Dubbed by the Associated Press in 1945 as "Bugsy" Bagarus the "Muscled Sinatra of the Gridiron", alluding to his popularity with fans. His speed and agility made him an overnight sensation as a pass receiver until a broken leg in 1947 slowed him down bringing his career to a close in 1949. He graduated from Washington High Schoo and the University of Notre Dame before going to the former San Diego Bombers, the Washington Redskins and the Los Angeles Rams from 1945 to 1949. In 1946 he married ANN FILCHAK in San Diego CA. Children: Mrs Patricia Boren of San Diego CA, Mary Robin and Ronald Bagarus of Germantown MD, and Gary Bagarus of Grenada Hills Ca. Also surviving are his sisters, Mrs Ella Barkovich of San Diego CA, Mrs Rose Zwierzynski and Mrs Julie Dobrzykowski of So Bend and 3 brothers, Louis, Julius and Richard Bagarus also of So Bend.
