SOUTH BEND - Emil Mamula, 90, of South Bend, died December 17, 2013, in his residence surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Mamula was born April 27, 1923, in Moran, Iowa, to the late Veronica (Yacinich) and Stephen Mamula. Emil lived for most of his life in South Bend, IN. On November 25, 1950, in Ft. Worth, TX, he married the love of his life, Frances E. Milan, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Melissa A. Kleva (Christopher) of Granger; two sons, Stephen M. Mamula (Eva Sutton) of New York, NY, and Mark J. Mamula (Ann) of Madison, CT; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Millie Montalvo. Besides his parents, Emil was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. Emil was a proud grandfather; he loved going to his grandchildren's sporting events and fishing with his three grandsons. He and Frances, his loving wife of 63 years, were avid Notre Dame footballs fans. Emil loved playing handball and racquetball and was a member of the YMCA and American Turners. Emil was a teacher at Central High School and an administrator with School City. In his later years he worked at St. Joseph Medical Center. Emil was also a past president of Michiana Marlins swimming team. Emil served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, achieving the rank of Corporal. He lived his life to the fullest until the very end, taking up roller-blading in his 70s, learning to play the guitar at age 80, and starting to learn Spanish at the age of 88. Whenever there was music you would find Emil and Frances "tripping the light fantastic," dancing together as one. Their favorite song: "Begin The Beguine." The family will receive friends on Friday, December 20th, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Welshheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 21st, at Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 Ironwood Rd., with Rev. Thomas Shoemaker officiating. Committal services and burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. SOUTH BEND -- Fran and Emil Mamula of 17990 Sable Ridge Drive celebrated their 55th anniversary with a family dinner at Morris Park Country Club. Mr. Mamula and Frances Milan married Nov. 25, 1950, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Fort Worth, Texas. They have three children, Stephen of New York City, Mark of Madison, Conn., and Melissa Kleva of Granger. They also have seven grandchildren. Mr. Mamula retired in 1983 after 30 years as an administrator and teacher for South Bend Community School Corp. He also taught at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana and has worked for 21 years at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Mamula retired in 1995 as director-manager after 17 years with Pro Health of SJRMC. They have lived in South Bend for 55 years. Published South Bend Tribune 12/11/2005
