SOUTH BEND - Belle Swedarsky, 99, passed away at 5:15 pm on September 13, 2012. Belle was born on March 6, 1913 to Herman and Sarah (Simon) Brickman in Chicago. On October 28, 1934, Belle was married to David Swedarsky in Chicago. David passed away one month before their 50th Anniversary on September 27, 1984. Belle and David operated Dave's Grocery on the southeast side of South Bend from 1937-1971. Everyone called her Miss Belle. From 1972-1982 Belle taught Title 1 at Studebaker School. From 1982-2000 Belle was a foster grandparent and in 1996 was honored as Foster Grandparent of the Year. Belle volunteered for Real Services for over 20 years. Mrs. Swedarsky is survived by her 3 sons: Louis (Julie) Swedarsky of Madison WI, Sheldon (Donna) Swedarsky of Indianapolis IN, and Leonard (Lois) Swedarsky of South Bend, who gave loving care to his mother for 14 years. Other survivors include: 9 grandchildren and 9 great grand children who will miss her dearly. Belle also leaves a brother, Morris Brickman of Highland Park, IL. Belle was preceded in death by her husband David, her parents, her brother Al Brickman, and a sister, Ida Brusslan. Belle considered Milan (Donna) Medich of South Bend as her 4th son and a dear family friend of over 50 years.
Belle loved the holidays as she looked forward every year to spend the holidays with her granddaughter Lisa Swedarsky as they spent precious time together. Belle was a member of the Hebrew Orthodox Congregation for the past 78 years and was its oldest member. Belle loved to cook for the Jewish holidays, sometimes cooking for 30 family members at her house. You will be missed by all...we love you forever. May her memory be for a blessing. Services will be at 11:00 am on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery Chapel in Mishawaka; Rabbi Meir Bulman will officiate the services. McGann Hay Funeral Homes, Forest G.
