Edward Anthony Lijewski, 80, of Union Pier, Mich., passed away at his home, Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006. Arrangements have been entrusted with Sommerfeld-Smith Family Funeral Home, New Buffalo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, New Buffalo, with Father James Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Sommerfeld-Smith Family Funeral Home, New Buffalo. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Ed was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Manistee, Mich., to Edward and Lucille (Jarka) Lijewski. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He married Elaine Sytek on Aug. 27, 1949, in Manistee. Ed was a teacher, and began his teaching career in the Caledonia, Mich., public school system. They moved to the New Buffalo area, due to their love of Lake Michigan, in 1957. Ed then continued his teaching career in the New Buffalo school system. He taught from 1957-1987 in the Industrial Arts and History classes, and was one of the area's first Driver's Ed teachers. After his retirement from teaching, he became Director of Transportation for New Buffalo Schools, until 1993. Ed was also a member of the Carpenter's Union of LaPorte, Ind.; a member of St. Mary of the Lake Church, New Buffalo; was a former New Buffalo Township Assessor and a member of the Planning Commission. He also owned and operated Mr. Ed's Variety Store, in Union Pier, for many years. His family and many friends will miss him greatly. He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his five children, Pamela (Jack) Comer of Edwardsburg, Mary Ann (Brent) Hurst of Colwich, Kan., Edward (Nancy) Lijewski and Roger (Alison) Lijewski both of New Buffalo, and Brian (Lisa) Lijewski of South Bend, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a brother, Alex Lijewski of Onekama, Mich.Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lucille; a brother, Jerome Lijewski; and a grandson, Jarett Hurst.Dale Edward PhillipsBENTON HARBOR - Dale Edward Phillips, 79, of Benton Harbor passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at home.A private family graveside service and burial will take place in Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor. There will be no visitation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fairplain Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, Benton Harbor.Survivors include his brother, Charles (Sandra) Phillips of Grand Rapids; his sister, Patricia (William) Moss of Lexington, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Delores Phillips of St. Joseph; and several nieces and nephews.Geraldine L.
