Jean M. Kopke, 87, of Elkhart, Indiana passed away at 7:22 p.m., Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in Hospice House. Jean had an operation September 9, 2015 and was never able to return home. She was born on September 11, 1928 in Beatrice, Nebraska to Milford and Edith (Piersol) Axe. Jean retired on February 1, 1991 from Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, where she was employed as an Executive Secretary. On March 6, 1949, in Lincoln, Nebraska, she married Robert L. Kopke, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Donna Fleissner of Westminster, Colorado, Nancy Noecker of Granger, Indiana and Linda (Blake) Hepler of Nappanee, Indiana; one son, Ronald (Sue) Kopke of South Bend, Indiana; twelve grandchildren, Kevin (Becca) Kopke, Kristi Kopke, Laurie (Sam) Mounsamrouath, Mark Fleissner, James (Hieu) Fleissner, Karen (Pat Clasen) Fleissner, Diana (Marvin) Walters, Lesley (Ryan) Woodruff, Adam Noecker, Corey Hepler, Scott (Kathryn) Hepler, and Tara (Jason) Briant; two step-grandchildren, William (Dawna) Knebel and Katie Knebel; fourteen great-grandchildren, Ashley (Damian) Lothamer, Lexi Kopke, Aaylah Kopke, Johnny Fleissner, Breanna Kopke, Justin Kopke, Jalen Kopke, Sam Mounsamrouath, Connor Wilson, Gianna Wilson, Hudson Walters, Grayson Woodruff, Tenley Briant and Kylee Kopke; four step great-grandchildren, Kali Walters, Hannah Woodruff, Colin Woodruff, and Nicholas Knebel; and one sister, Janet (Richard) Subbert of Lanesboro, Iowa. Jean was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Lee Kopke, who died at the age of 4 from leukemia in 1957; and her two brothers, Bobby and Don Axe. Jean had attended the University of Nebraska. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, and Church Choir. Jean and her husband wintered in Texas the last 22 years. She was a member of the Red Hatters in Texas. She enjoyed square dancing and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jean's name may be offered to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Funeral Services will take place at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 23, 2015 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church,1340 Sycamore Street, Niles, Michigan, 49120, with visitation one hour prior to services in the church. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Indiana.
