A Pole by the name of Jacob Was was instantly killed by a falling limb while felling trees inthe Grapevine woods about seven miles west of the city at 2 pm on Wednesday January 26, 1881. He was employed by Fred Miller cutting saw logs on the Studebaker tract. He felled a large tree which caught on a smaller poplar. A limb eight inches thickwas broken from this and a branch as aarge as a mans arm was broken fromthis and fell violentlytothe ground. The heavy end struck the Pole on the top of his skull, killing him instantly. The desceased leaves a wife and five children. He resided on Division Road (now Western Ave), where he had forty acres of land partly paid for. The remains were buried Friday at Cedar Grove Cemetery. He was about thirty years old.
