[N15112] Wilhelmina (Wilma) Egging
Jun. 30, 1927 - Aug. 02, 2016
WAKARUSA - Wakarusa: Wilhelmina (Wilma) G. Egging died on Tuesday August 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with her children by her side at Miller's Merry Manor Rehab. She was born in Didam, Gelderland, The Netherlands on June 30, 1927 to Lodivicus and Gezina (Jansen) Peters. Her nickname of “Miep” was given to her at a young age which means stubborn and bull-headed, and she was that way until her departure. She went to school to be a maid, and she worked for a doctor and his family for a number of years. On March 27, 1951, she married Joseph A. Egging in Didam. Joe had returned to Didam after living in Mishawaka, where he worked at St. Francis Convent as a farmhand. The Sisters of the Convent were her official sponsors for her to be able to arrive to the United States and she became a United States Citizen in 1960.With only knowing four English words, “yes”, “no”, “thank-you” and “please”, she taught herself to read. She would also read first grade books from the teachers at the convent. As she worked in the kitchen, the nuns would also help teach her the language. In 1954, they moved to Nappanee to become grain, dairy, hog and chicken farmers. She worked in the fields and helped with the dairy farm, and her prize was a clean barn and a sparkling milk tank. Wilma was an amazing housekeeper, hard worker, and knitted numerous afghans and scarves for people. Her other past time was reading medical books and knew that knowledge until her last days. She loved her family dearly and would do anything to protect and care for them. Wilma was a former member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Bremen. She helped start St. Isadore Catholic Church in Nappanee. She also enjoyed knitting. Surviving are her children Bert (Elaine) Egging of Etna Green, and Debby (Robert) Ortiz of Wakarusa; grandchildren Ashley (Chad) Lambright, Goshen, Mary (Justin) Dale, Nappanee, and Carrie (Patrick) O'Keefe, Bremen; great-grandchildren; Natalee, Gavin, and Wyatt Lambright, Brayden and Madison Dale, and Addyson O'Keefe. She was preceded in death by her siblings.Visitation will be on Friday, August 5, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home in Nappanee, and for one hour prior to the funeral service at Good Shepherd Hall in Bremen, on Saturday, August 6, 2016. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic's Catholic Church. Father Fernando Jimenes will officiate. Burial will follow at Bremen Cemetery.
