MISHAWAKA - La Vonda M. De Bruyne, 91, passed away on Sunday, April 27 in Sunset House, Mishawaka. La Vonda was born on February 13, 1923 in Culver, IN as the daughter of Ralph C. and Ethel M. (Emigh) Voreis. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Ralph Voreis and a son, Dennis De Bruyne. On November 20, 1946 in St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka she married Raymond De Bruyne. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1983. Surviving are her son, James (Carolyn) De Bruyne of Mishawaka; grandchildren, Steven Bowering, Lynette (Barry) Frick and Dawn Mercer; great-grandchildren, Danielle, Andrew, Tyler, Josh and Brandon; four great-great-grandchildren, sister, Glennadean Romeu of Summerfield, FL; brothers, Virgil Voreis of Granger and Clifford (Betty) Voreis of Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Elsie De Bruyne of Mishawaka and Joyce Voreis of Orangeburg, SC, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. La Vonda graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1941. She was employed at Ball Band (Uniroyal) from 1941 to 1983. She was active in South Bend, Mishawaka Women's Bowling Association and Kaydette Bowling League. She belonged to M. H. S. Alumni Association and the Graduating "41" club, Uniroyal Ladies Club and Retirees Club, and St. Bavo Catholic Church where she served as a past president of the young ladies sodality. She was a volunteer to set up Selective Service records for drafting servicemen for WW II. Later she worked in the Selective Service office at night after the Board meeting preparing draft notices for mailing to inductees. She also served in the American Red Cross as a Grey Lady at St. Joseph in Mishawaka for two years and hundreds of hours during WW II. She served three years as a Junior Achievement advisor. She was a dedicated volunteer for the annual "Needy family project" for many years that was sponsored by Uniroyal, Inc. During WW II she was active in State Productions in which Uniroyal employees participated and was a dancer in three of the shows. La Vonda was a model in several style shows for her friend, Betty Moorhead and her Town Shop. She loved to travel, went to Hawaii twice; enjoyed playing BINGO, going to Las Vegas and casinos. She was a Notre Dame Football fan, enjoyed the Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Colts and NASCAR. La Vonda also enjoyed working on her crossword puzzles, crocheting and knitting. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice and Glennadean for all of their care and support. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. with funeral service at 5 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Barry England officiating.
