SOUTH BEND - Sophie C. Opaczewski, 97, passed away Monday, December 22, 2014, in her residence surrounded by her family. Sophie was born August 6, 1917, in South Bend, to the late Stanley and Anna (Ziolkowski) Gadacz. On September 30, 1939, Sophie married Clement Opaczewski in St. Adalbert; he preceded her in death in March of 1999. Sophie was also preceded in death by a brother, John 'Smoky' Gadacz; and sisters, Helen Barnhart and Lucille Borowiak. Survivors of Sophie include her children, Ronald Opaczewski of South Bend, James (Evelyn) Opaczewski of West Chicago, Joyce (Donald) Degan of Palm Coast, FL, Kathleen (Lynn Christensen) Opaczewski of South Bend and Sharon Riffle of South Bend; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Sophie retired in 1978 from the Avionics Corporation. She was a parishioner of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Harvest House and she enjoyed serving food for the parish fish fries. Sophie was also a member of the Sisters Auxiliary, Club 53 and the Meribelle Card Club. Visitation for Sophie will be 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, December 28, 2014, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Monday, December 29, 2014, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, 333 N. Summit St., Toledo, OH 43699.
