“Riner Hellenga Dies at Farm Home Tuesday
Mr. Riner Hellenga, 79 years of age, passed away at his home north of Three Oaks, at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. He had been ill since Saturday, when he was stricken with a heart attack while working in his orchard south of town. Born February 1, 1862, in Roseland, Illinois, Mr. Hellenga came to Three Oaks with his parents when he was but five years old. Except for a few years residence in North Dakota he had spent most of the last seventy-seven years in the Three Oaks vicinity. On February 7, 1888, he married Miss Mary Lusso, of Three Oaks, who survives him, as do also two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Flynn and Miss Esther Hellenga, and two sons, Paul and Theodore Hellenga, all of Three Oaks, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Four brothers, Peter and Fred Hellenga, both of Three Oaks, Sam Hellenga, of Otsego Michigan, and Al Hellenga, of Grand Haven, Michigan, and two sisters, Mrs. Richard Portinga of Three Oaks, and Mrs. H. P. Reynolds of Dalton, Mich., and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Hellenga was a member of the Methodist Church and served a number of yeas on the Church Board. He leaves a host of friends to mourn his passing. The remains were removed from the L. E. Lake Funeral Home on Wednesday, to the Hellenga home where friends may call until 1:30 Friday afternoon. A prayer service will be held at the home for relatives and funeral services will be at 2:00 o’clock in the Methodist Church with Rev. Benjamin VanDyke officiating in the absence of the paster, Rev. Lous Ellinger. Assisting clergyman will be Rev. J. C. Boerman. Interment will be held in Forest Lawn cemetery, with John Williams, Orville Duddleson, Oscar Martin, Milton Francis, Arthur Martin and R. W. Weller serving as pallbearers.” From The Galien River Gazette, June 19, 1941, page 1
