Gertrude Boembeke
Nov. 6, 1923 - Dec. 22, 2013
MISHAWAKA - Gertrude A. Boembeke, 90, passed away on Sunday, December 22, in her home. Gertrude was born on November 6, 1923, in South Bend, as the daughter of the late Ignatius and Frances (Kwiecinski) Ruszkowski. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Jane, Rose, Irene, Rita, Adeline, Barbara and Evelyn; and brothers, Joe and Harry Ruszkowski. On February 2, 1946, she married Omer J. Boembeke. He preceded her in death on April 14, 2011. Surviving are her daughters, Emily (Bill) Stauffacher of Mishawaka and Elaine (Bruce) Huffman of South Bend; a son, Bruce (Janice) Boembeke of Mishawaka; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Richard and Donald Ruszkowski, both of South Bend. The family extends a special thanks to Joan Parmley, Michelle Banks and Hospice, earthly angels who lovingly cared for Gertie. Gertrude worked for Kroger for over 17 years before she retired in 1983. She was a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church in Mishawaka most of her life. Known as "BooBoo" to most, Gert loved God and being a sacristan. She adored her family; she and Papa helped raise several grandkids. She would show strangers pictures of them and talk about their individual accomplishments. She loved Vegas, casinos, bingo, and everyone enjoyed her gifts of crocheted slippers, afghans and baby blankets. She was a breast cancer survivor for 40 years. When being generous with cash, her favorite saying was "Take it while my hands are warm!" Visitation will be on Thursday, December 26, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 27, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Entombment will follow at Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum, Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka; or Supporting Center for Hospice Care, South Bend-Elkhart-Plymouth, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
