SOUTH BEND - Alice M. Kochanowski, 88, of South Bend, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, at Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Mrs. Kochanowski was born on April 5, 1920, in South Bend, to the late Andrew and Laura (Gorka) Jaworski and had remained a lifelong resident. She was also preceded in death by a son, Edward, in 1963, and by two sisters, Clara Labuzienski and Marcia Goetz. On June 6, 1942, Alice married Eugene Kochanowski, who died in 2000. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Moran of South Bend, and Emily (Gerald) Jamberdino of Rochester, New York; by four grandchildren, Laura (Jack) Moran Walton of South Bend, and Jeffrey, Jon, and Dominika Jamberdino of Rochester, and a great-grandchild, Clara Walton. Mrs. Kochanowski retired from Saint Mary's College in 1985, where she was secretary to the biology and chemistry departments. Prior to that, she worked at the South Bend Credit Bureau for many years. In retirement, she was a committed volunteer for many organizations, including St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, the Literacy Council of St. Joseph County, College Football Hall of Fame, the University of Notre Dame (campus tours), and Holy Cross Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 PM Saturday, February 7, 2009, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, of which she was a member for more than 50 years. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. today, February 6, 2009, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 North Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a parish rosary will be said at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, 46637; or to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1520 Vassar Avenue, South Bend, IN 46628.
