[N9507] Evelyn E. Lehner nee Castello
Oct. 25, 1911 - May 21, 2014
GRANGER - Evelyn E. Lehner, 102, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Evelyn was born on October 25, 1911, in Notre Dame, IN, to Camiel "Tommy" and Sylvia Marie (Van Neste) Castello. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edward Castello; a daughter, Betty Rabe; and a grandson, Robert Birk. On November 15, 1932, in St. Bavo Catholic Church, she married Martin A. Lehner and moved to the now historic house at State Road 23 and Gumwood Road in Granger. Their four children, Mary, Carl, Dorothy and Betty, all were born in that house. Martin also preceded her in death in 1988. Surviving are her children, Mary (Devon) Birk, Dorothy (Clem) Degucz and Carl (Mary Anne) Lehner, all of Granger; 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. The family first attended Mass in a small chapel at St. Joseph's Farm and then became one of the 145 founding families of the new St. Pius X Church in 1956. She was a true farmer's wife, working side by side with Martin. Evelyn excelled in her baking abilities and was noted for her apple pie and black walnut sponge cake. Later in life she enjoyed crocheting (which she was still doing last week), quilting and listening to Polka music. She lived, she laughed, she loved, and she will be greatly missed. Evelyn was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Farm Bureau, Granger Homemakers Club and a lifetime member of Tamarack Grange. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger. Monsignor William Schooler will officiate. Private burial will take place on Tuesday in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Foundation Supporting Center for Hospice Care: South Bend-Elkhart-Plymouth, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545. She lived, she laughed, she loved, and she will be greatly missed. To leave the family an online condolence, please visit our website at www.hahnfuneralhomes.com.
