Clyde L. "Barney" Barnhart
Feb. 14, 1924 - April 6, 2013

SOUTH BEND - Clyde L. "Barney" Barnhart, age 89, of South Bend, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Memorial Hospital. Barney was born February 14, 1924, in Lakeville, Indiana, to the late Walter and E. Violet (McBride) Barnhart. Following graduation in 1942 from Washington-Clay High School, Mr. Barnhart enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served honorably during WW II and the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954, having received a Purple Heart, the WW II Victory Medal, and a Presidential Citation for his service.He was married in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Ruth (Tetzlaff) Barnhart on April 9, 1984. Ruth survives along with his daughters, Becky L. Kelley of Niles, Michigan, and Judy Kay (Bruce) Cutting of Paw Paw, Michigan. His daughter, Janet Eileen Hull, preceded him in death. Barney is also survived by 5 stepchildren, Vickie McCollum, Brian McCollum, Craig (fiancée, Kim) McCollum, David McCollum and Edward McCollum.
Surviving as well are his sisters, Marilyn (Charles Sr.) Beaver of Joplin, Missouri, and Dixie Murphy of South Bend; along with 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Barnhart, and his stepdaughter, Rebecca Crist.Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the 12:00 pm funeral service on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. Entombment and Military Honors will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Barney was employed in the transportation industry for many years, retiring from Holland Motor Freight more than 25 years ago. He enjoyed taking cruises with his wife Ruth, walleye fishing, camping, and spending time outdoors. He was also a longtime member of American Legion Post #303 in Mishawaka.
